There are things you can do to help in an emergency if you don’t have first aid training, however there are also aspects that you shouldn’t attempt without the appropriate training.
What does the UK law say?
According to UK law you are not required to have training to give basic first aid in emergency situations. It is important though that you stick to basic first aid and know when to step away, because you are only protected from legal action to an extent with the Social Action, Responsibility and Heroism Act 2015.
What can you do in an emergency without training?
In an emergency situation it is natural to want to help in whatever way you can, so it is best to know what your limitations would be in this situation. If you don’t have first aid training, in an emergency you can:
- Call the emergency services.
- Reassure the person who is injured.
- Put pressure on a wound.
- Provide chest compressions for CPR. If you aren’t trained, you cannot perform the rescue breaths.
What can’t you do in an emergency without training?
If you do not have the first aid training in an emergency situation you cannot perform the procedures and interventions that are more complex.
If you are unsure of anything, do not do it. This is particularly true for things like CPR where you have to keep the correct rhythm and ensure that you don’t press down too hard or too far, as well as tourniquets which are always best left to those with an understanding of how they work.
Why get first aid training?
First aid training will allow you to have a better understanding of what needs to be done and how to carry it out. It will give you the opportunity to try techniques in a calm and controlled setting before you have to implement it in an emergency.
If you are wanting to help in various situations, first aid training could also allow you to do so without hesitation. You would not be limited by your lack of knowledge or ability and will be able to go further with your immediate first aid.
