While it is highly unlikely that you will fail your first aid course, it can happen. However, if you go to your training with a positive attitude, an open mind, and are willing to get involved, you will almost certainly pass.
What does a first aid course entail?
The lessons that are covered by your first aid course will differ depending on the length of course that you have chosen. What you are looking to get out of your training and where you are hoping to be able to use it will also impact what will be included. However, with every first aid course you will receive an understanding of the basic first aid principles and basic life support.
Most courses will require you to have a working knowledge of the theory behind practices and procedures as well as the ability to carry them out. This means that your first aid course will be a mix of practical, hands-on learning with the equipment, as well as learning the theory and laws behind the use of equipment, etc.
Where does the training course take place?
There are also different types of learning environments. For example, for our First Aid at Work – QNUK Level 3 & RQF course spans over three days. There is a blended course, where you learn by self-study for a day, or you can choose to attend a venue in London for the full three days. In contrast, our one-day course, Emergency First Aid at Work – QNUK Level 3 & RQF, is all based on site. So, it is important that you choose the learning environment that will work best for you.
Similarly, if you have multiple employees who require the training, or can’t make it to the site where the training is taking place, we have the option of coming to you. In some circumstances, the first aid training can take place at your workplace to make things easier for your staff.
How is a first aid course assessed?
For our first aid courses, you are assessed via a multiple-choice question paper and some practical exercises. If you pass these, you will then receive your certificate.
This is the case for most first aid courses as they require you to have both theoretical and practical knowledge of the topic. For example, if you only have theoretical knowledge, it can be difficult to carry out the procedure in an emergency setting.
Can you fail a first aid course?
The simple answer is yes, it is possible to fail a first aid course. However, it is very unlikely that you will do so. Through the training you are given and the opportunities to practise the procedures as you go there is very little that would prevent you from passing your first aid course.
During your training course, make sure you participate as much as possible and ask questions if you don’t understand something, which will reduce your chances of failing.
Tips to pass your first aid course:
Be prepared
If you are asked to read some material before attending the classes, do so. Or, if you are nervous, have a quick look online or contact someone at the company to find out what you can expect on the day and if there is anything you need to know beforehand.
Attend all sessions
If you are on a two or three-day course in particular, make sure that you attend all the sessions that you have been signed up for. If you miss a part of the course, there is no guarantee that this won’t be essential to you passing.
Be focused
There is no point showing up and not paying attention to what is being taught. This is one of the ways that you could fail, because you will not remember the information when you are asked for it.
Maintain communication with the instructor
Ask questions if you don’t understand something, even if it can seem daunting. No one will judge you for needing clarification.
Also, ask for feedback when you are practising. If you aren’t confident about what you are doing, ask the trainer to give you some feedback so that you can improve.
Stay calm
If you are someone who can get nervous with tests and assessments try to remain calm. Take a deep breath if it helps and take your time before answering each question. The calmer you are, the more likely you are to do well.
What to do if you fail
While it is unlikely that you will fail the course, if you do, there is always the option to retake the test or the whole course to improve your knowledge.
